What Are The Fog Lights For And Are They Important?

There are many auto body parts around our vehicles that are obviously important. You cannot go without doors, or a hood. You also need your bumpers and fenders just as much. But there are other parts that are not so obviously useful. Sure, you definitely need your headlights, but what about those pesky fog lights. They always seem to crack, but you may have never even used them. Are they even important? Should you replace a broken one? Let’s see!

The Purpose of Fog Lights

First of all, let’s address the elephant in the room – they are called fog lights after all. So they should be used during a fog, right? But that does not tell us why. Or how they work. And if you do not understand something properly, there is a good chance that you will not care much about it.

Here is what you need to know – light has some peculiar properties. Some of them get painfully apparent in the midst of a fog. When you have your headlights on and you are driving to a cloud of tiny water particles (not even droplets), the light gets reflected through them and shines straight to you. You may get blinded, but worst of all, the headlights don’t do much to actually light the way.

This is where the fog lights step in. Since they shine their light from a much lower angle, the light does not get reflected in such a way. They are also bright and direct, which is why you are not to use them if the fog is not too dense. During such a time, however, fog lights are indispensable. They help you see better through the fog and you do not get blinded by your own lighting system.

Should You Replace A Broken Fog Light?

Since fog lights are placed relatively low on the vehicle, they often suffer from that. This is because they are taking all the dirt, dust, road debris and rubble that may be coming your way. Even when they have hardened glass panels, they may still break from time to time.

While you may see the benefit of this current auto body part, it is likely that you do not think it is all that important. After all, how often do you drive through fogs? Do you even have these around your part of the States? Is there even a reason to go and replace a broken one if you are not going to use them all that often? Yes!

Think about it – it only takes one serious accident to change the course of your life forever. If a fog light gives you the chance to reduce such risks, is it not worth it? Driving blind through a fog is a nightmare, and even if you rarely see these around your part of the world, they may still happen.

So be responsible and change your fog lamps if you notice they are broken or dead. You will find plenty of high quality alternatives at our online store!
