How To Replace A Front Bumper

How To Replace A Front Bumper

Car repairs may be extremely expensive, so it’s no wonder that people want to know how to take care of at least some auto body parts in such a maintenance. Still, before attempt anything, it is best to know what you are doing. The information we share below in no means prepares you to handle a bumper replacement like a professional.

Nevertheless, we think it is important to know how the whole process is usually handled. If you want to risk it and go at it by yourself, remember to wear protective gear and bring with you the right tools for the job. The replacement itself can vary from vehicle to vehicle, but for the most part, this is how it’s done:

1. First a mechanic would inspect the front bumper for any wires. Signal and fog lights may be attached to it, so it’s highly like it can’t be removed without disconnecting these wires. The mechanic would find a way to disconnect them

2. The front bumper needs to be supported before any attempts at detaching it go on. It is good to have some sort of a spray to make loosening the mounting bolts easier. Often it would be impossible without a proper chemical (rust is not unlikely either).

3. After the bolts have been sprayed and are not able to be loosened, they can be removed as well. When they are taken out the mounting bracket gets removed and the mechanic can proceed further.

4. The front bumper is carefully removed and inspected further. Very often it will have some things attached to it. We have already mention fog lamps, but the license plate may also be there, as well as bumper trim.

5. The new bumper should have a similar mounting method to the old one, so the mechanic would try to figure the proper way to install it. If the part is not right, the mounting brackets won’t fit, or the part won’t look natural once fitted.

6. Before the bumper is installed, the attachment from the other one need to be transferred here. When this is not handled by a professional, people often forget to do that the first time around.

7. Here comes the tricky part. Once the mechanic goes to install the bumper, it is very important to torque the mounting bolts in a specific manner. Different manufacturers have their own specifications and this must be done according to them.

8. At this point the only thing that remains is to attach any wires, if that is at all necessary. If the bumper has nothing specific to it, this step is skipped.

This is the gist of the bumper replacement process. While it may seem simple, it can vary a lot from vehicle to vehicle, so any attempts at doing it are at your own risk. If you want to purchase new auto body parts, check out our catalog!
