How To Paint A New Bumper

How To Paint A New Bumper

Nobody likes replacing auto body parts, unless it is on purpose. However, most of the time we are talking about accidental damages, which are often a pain to deal with, if you do not know what you are doing. Not only do you have to install them, but before that you have to get them painted in the exact color of your vehicle. Does this sound easy to you? Let’s see if it is!

Is DIY Bumper Painting For You?

While the whole process may sound easy, it actually isn’t. The thing is that colors are not that easy to match, especially if you only have a general idea about what coloring to buy. If you have seen some discrepancies in the colors of a vehicle, this is likely due to a bad DIY paintjob.

You can never go wrong with painting the bumper black or grey though. That is because these colors are neutral and if you want your car’s color to contrast the bumper, they are an excellent choice. That way you won’t have to try hard in order to find a matching paint, and you can just go on with applying it.

However, if you want to match the color of the car to that of the about-to-be-painted bumper, you have to go out of your way to figure out what paint you need to buy. This is largely dependent on the kind of vehicle you have, so you have to do more research online.

Also, while a DIY job may be done quite frugally, if you want to actually have a decent outcome, you should buy several supplies and tools. A paint spray gun, for example, will help you apply the paint much more easily and evenly. However, you can forgo it entirely, if you are on an extreme budget.

So How Do You Actually Do The Painting?

If you have decided that painting your bumper is a worthy DIY project and you do not care much about saving money, but rather want to do something with your hands, then here is what you need to do!

The first step is to sand down the primer a little bit. This layer serves as a contact point between the paint and the bumper, but it can have imperfections. You have to find them before you apply the paint, otherwise they will become visible and ruin the look of the new bumper. You find them, sand them down, but don’t go overboard – just smooth things up. Also make sure to be using the wet sanding method and not dry sanding.

After you have finished sanding the primer, you should clean the bumper up from any dust left. A thorough cleanup is absolutely necessary, otherwise you will end up messing the paintjob with dust blobs.

When all that is done you can go ahead and apply your base paint layer. Just make sure you do an even job with the spray, otherwise you will ruin the look. After you finish painting everything, wait for it to dry up and again wet sand any imperfection, and apply more paint if necessary.

Lastly, apply the final coat layer that gives the bumper and other body parts that nice glossy shine you are used to. And that’s it!

If you want to avoid all that hassle, you can simply purchase your part pre-painted from our shop!
